I go through my Check-in Checklist often. I update it often, too. I was having trouble sleeping tonight, and going through my Check-in Checklist wasn’t helping like it usually does. This may surprise you, but I have a tendency to overthink things (pause for shocked gasps). So, I got up and decided to re-write my list. I started by writing down all of my most important principles, at least all of the most important ones that I could think of off the top of my head. Instead of ending up with the 10 or so most important principles I expected to have, I ended up with 29 of them. Here’s another shocker, I can be indecisive and it can be hard for me to let go of things. I then realized that everything I have written on my website is part of my Check-in Checklist, and I could certainly include many things that are not on my website. So, as I read through my freshly written list, I thought about what my most important principle is, and the answer was very clear to me, at least in that moment. My most important principle connects me with everything that is important to me, including but not limited to: love, fatherhood, family, friends, life, awareness, nature, wisdom, wellness, wholeness, being present, purpose, learning, teaching, coaching, self-care, play, my mindset, simplicity, inner peace, walking, faith, happiness, basketball, and “winning”. My most important principle is this:
Choose to be centered. Connect your mind, body, and spirit with all that is.
Nothing has helped me more in my life than choosing to be centered. It has made me a better basketball player, coach, student, teacher, father, husband, family member, friend, and person. Right now, the next play for me is getting some sleep, and choosing to be centered will once again help me to win the next play! Good night.
