“Win the next play!” is my motto. It was born in basketball, but it now lives in every aspect of my life. My basketball teams break every huddle and end every practice or game with an exclamation of “Win!”. My players know that when we say win, we are not talking about winning on the scoreboard or winning championships. We are talking about winning the play right in front of us. We are talking about winning the next thing we do, on or off the basketball court. With each exclamation of “Win!”, we are devoting ourselves to the present moment, to the next task in school or at home, to the next play in practice or in a game, to battling for the next rebound, to rotating full speed on the next defensive series, to finishing strong on the next drive to the basket, and to fiercely fighting on when a basketball game (or anything else in life) is not going our way, especially when it becomes obvious that we are going to lose. Applying this philosophy to your life does not mean you are going to win everything. It means you are choosing to be a winner no matter what happens to you. Choosing to win the next play is a path to better basketball and a better life. If you are reading this, it likely means that you are one of my favorite people, and I am so very grateful that I get to walk this path with you. Win the next play!

Awesome Brad very motivating and encouraging keep up the good work!!!
Thanks, Drew. I really appreciate you.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom.
Thank you for encouraging me to share it, Gloria. Let’s have coffee sometime, like right now, upstairs in our kitchen. 🙂
Brad, I wish the kids in my life had such a strong, positive, and sweetly sincere roll model as you. I’m proud of the man and friend you are.
Say “hi” to Gloria for me
Cyndy, your kind words mean so much to me. They really do. You already know this, but you are definitely one of my favorite people!

I love the philosophy. It is very sound. That is what makes you a great coach, teacher, husband and father.
Thanks, Merrill. I really appreciate that. You’re the man!
Very well said
Thank you, April. Your daughter did this very well when she played for me.
Coach, you inspire me to be better everyday and grow as a person and as a player.
Thank you so much for this comment. It means the world to me that you feel that way. I was going to tell you guys about this website when we do team pictures after the winter break. I’m glad you have already found it. I’m going to keep doing everything I can to make us a better basketball team and better people. I know I can count on you guys to do the same! Thank you for helping to lead us this year, both verbally and by example. We are going to have a great season next year, and as you guys already know, in our minds, the next season has already started. Thank you again, sincerely. Win the next play!
